Pilates During Pregnancy: Alice’s Experience through Alessia eyes, the pilates instructor from the center
During my first year working as a Pilates Trainer at Polispecialistico Paradiso, I had the opportunity and the pleasure of working with Alice, an occupational therapist and the owner of our centre. Together, we began a personalised training journey using the flagship piece of equipment of the Pilates method, the Reformer, to support her during one of the most magical and emotional experiences in a woman’s life: pregnancy.
In this article, I would like to explore the benefits of Pilates during the nine months of pregnancy through Alice’s direct experience.
Alice’s experience
How long have you been practising Pilates?
“I practised Pilates throughout my entire pregnancy, from the very beginning until a few weeks before giving birth.”
Had you had any previous experience with Pilates?
“Yes, before my pregnancy I had already been practising Pilates for around two and a half years, always here at Polispecialistico Paradiso.”
How did you find these months of practice?
“I am very happy with my experience, especially with the sessions during pregnancy. I found the instructors extremely competent, knowledgeable and attentive to the changes in the female body during such a special period as pregnancy.”
What goals did you achieve?
“First of all, preventing back pain, which is a very common issue during pregnancy. In addition, the work on hip and pelvic mobility helped me tremendously, and I am convinced that it was also beneficial during labour, helping the baby to position correctly. Despite the many physical changes, I was able to maintain good flexibility.”
As an instructor, I can say that it was truly moving to follow Alice week after week, watching her grow stronger and improve with determination. I strongly believe that Pilates can support women during such a delicate time for their bodies, when physical activity plays an important role in improving blood circulation, working on breathing, and learning to recognise and activate the pelvic floor muscles.
Conclusion
Alice’s experience confirms that Pilates, when included in a programme guided by qualified professionals, can be a valuable support during pregnancy, contributing to musculoskeletal wellbeing, pelvic mobility, and the prevention of the most common discomforts associated with pregnancy.
